Unemployment has been rising with thousands of people joining the dole queue over the past year.

The government thinks it’s going to get worse and predicts that around 1 million Aussies will be out of work by the middle of next year, although some believe that figure is too high.

And while it’s easier to lose your job than ever, getting a new one is proving more and more difficult with 50 percent fewer jobs now being advertised than a year ago.

In addition, more and more people are moving to part-time work as companies that aren't sacking people look to reduce workers' hours.

Are you worried about losing your job?

Would you take a pay cut to keep your job?

Are bosses getting nastier because of the financial crisis?

You're unemployed and yet there you sit, where? An internet cafe? Or on your PC you bought with taxpayers' money? Find your own $1.10 you lazy ***, or better still, go volunteer somewhere that will make you a worthwhile human being! It's people like you that make me so angry because I'm working to support my children but I could be sitting on my *** collecting welfare too, but I choose not to!!!
the work place stinks its the managers the women r the worst *** i am a woman but will never lower myself people hate nice people an there is no place in the world for them. The govenment should put more money to make happy work places and every one will be at work just think so many out of work why? if u walk the streets daily u will get a job but the people make yr life a living hell i know mine is but i have my faith and if God is for me who can be against me,
i have finally woken to the fact that as a worker i have become obsolete. for seven years i was a seasonal worker. harvest operating, fruit picking etc. More and more i am finding racism aimed towards me.I am australian. Many times recently i have gone to farms only to be told thier is no work.only to find the workplace filled with Korean people working for contractors. contractors who are undercutting the australian wage earner. I feel for the poor worker being paid next to nothing. three winners greedy contractors , greedy farmers, greedy supermarkets. this year i picked pears,$3per bin more than seven years ago.$62 a day picking oranges. So to all the wingeing people out thier worried about having to do a bit extra spare a though to the people who really do it tough.Scared of losing my job HA they can have it...mine was lost years ago
Most people are spot on in their assessment. Senior management continues to receive nice pay rises (so much for restraint) and speaks in drivel to justify it, while the rest of us work hard in a competitive environment where we fight over the scraps. It is certainly a buyer's market for employers and we have to wade it out. Everyone is asked to do more for less, with the resultant stress on family relationships etc. Some people are retiring earlier from the stress and positions are not being replaced.
Have been with the company for 5 years and had only had 3 weeks holiday, that is my choice because i have saved 16 weeks in annual leave for a rainy day if it comes. Companies are definitely using the financial crisis as an excuses but the directors are still traveling the world first class and pocketing plenty of bonuses. Best to put your head down and *** up and don't be seen to be questioning any company problems, let them deal with it. My boss is pretty fair but has been known to get rid of people for the slightest mistake or misdemeanor.
The current statistics are most likely doctored by the skillful labor spin doctors. Unmployment is a real issue becouse unemployment is on the increase. If people are forced from full time to part time, means that full time jobs are gone. The clever labor spin doctors claim that part time jobs were created, but conveniently they do not admit that full time jobs are lost.
The company I"m with is about to reduce staff members, and I sit here wondering if I'll have a job next month, as a lot of you have said, management are using this as an excuse, all they really care about are their shareholders, to hell with the staff who keep the company going, and of course management won't be made redundant or asked to reduce their hours of work - if the managers were any good at their jobs they'd find a way to hold onto their good employees so that when we come out of this "recession" they will be able to make their companies flourish and really impress the shareholders.
It is not your age that will stop you from getting work Dan. It is your attitude !! It doesn't matter how old you are, if you want a job you will find something to suit. It may not be the best paid job, or the job you were trained to do, but there is always something out there. Been there, done that !!
You bet I'm scared about getting the sack or 'retrenched'. I have a boss who is a bully, sly, sneeky, arrogant, underhanded and hoodwinks those on the 'Board'. He undermines me, takes credit for my good ideas, discredits everyone else around him to make himself look good. And he rarely washes his hands after going to the toilet, burps and sniffs all day in his office, but appears to be a well presented business man to others. He does what he likes and manipulates people. He knows I'm good, so he wants to get rid of me. Not a good feeling. Yes he is getting nastier. But people from places where he used to work say that he's a real *** or similar and sympathise with us.
I have been in a company where we have had at least 10 rounds of retrenchments in 10 years. BUT we have the same management. We had no pay rises for 5 years, then got a 5% one and have recently been asked to take a voluntary 5% cut. So in effect I earn less now than I did 7 years ago and I am now doing 3 peoples jobs. BUT still we have the same management. The media fuels uncertainty but when you work for a company where negative things happen every other month you live on the edge.
